A combination of the words "development" and "operations", DevOps is an ethos that highlights the importance of collaboration between software developers and production IT professionals for a smoother, more productive workflow in the process of developing and deploying software.
At the core, a DevOps engineer is a tech professional who understands the software development lifecycle and can use engineering tools and processes to solve operations challenges. They must balance a number of different roles including coding, integrating and testing with the goal of creating a working environment in which software can be built, tested and deployed quickly, reliably and frequently.
With a strong DevOps team, a company can deploy new features (and fix bugs) on apps much faster. As more organizations move to DevOps, here are the top five trends every company should be keeping an eye on in 2020:
1. DevSecOps Will Become A Priority
The software development lifecycle is prone to human errors. Security in DevOps, or DevSecOps, is the practice of implementing security into every step of the software development process to reduce the frequency of those errors and their resulting cybersecurity issues such as attacks, data breaches, etc.
Furthermore, with the growing emphasis on data privacy regulations such as GDPR both in the U.S. and globally, more developers will be legally required to build strong security policies straight into the code.
2. Artificial Intelligence Adoption Will Continue to Increase
DevOps generates a mass amount of data; which humans naturally struggle to enter and analyze accurately. Identifying these vulnerable, error-prone areas of the development process and replacing them with artificial intelligence will eliminate repetitive tasks, reduce testing time and enhance decision-making. Research shows 22 percent of IT enterprises are already using machine learning and data sciences as in their work.
3. Cloud-native DevOps Will Become More Prominent
Cloud-native DevOps allows companies to enjoy faster time-to-market by automating the installation, configuration, and supervision of cloud computing services. Experts predict that cloud-native DevOps is the future of software development. For instance, Abby Kearns, executive director of the open-source platform as a service provider Cloud Foundry Foundation, delivered a keynote speech at the 2018 edition of cloud computing industry event LC3 in which she gave the example of the U.S. Air Force as an organization that has adopted cloud-native DevOps to develop apps that can run on multiple clouds.
Oracle also predicts that 80% of enterprise IT will move to the cloud by 2025 and the CNCF survey results showed that the use of cloud-native technologies in production has grown over 200%.
4. The Rise of Serverless Architecture
The serverless market is expected to reach $7.7 billion by 2021. According to RightScale's 2018 State of the Cloud report, serverless is the fastest-growing cloud service model today with an annual growth rate of 75 percent. Developers prefer serverless because it enables higher developer productivity, faster deployments, enhanced scalability and better user experience. Current serverless computing options include: AWS Lambda, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud Platform and IBM Bluemix/OpenWhisk.
5. Open Source Will Continue To Grow
Open-source software is great for developers because it enables them to learn new techniques, gain teamwork experience and enjoy a deeper sense of purpose, belonging and community. Recent research by CB Insights predicts that the open-source services industry will reach nearly $33 billion by 2022.
A survey by Synopsys also found that almost 70% of corporate organizations either contribute to or have open-source projects. Tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Intel, and Facebook are all actively contributing to many projects on GitHub despite not being open-source organizations themselves. Google’s open-source software projects like Kubernetes, Istio, and Knative have attracted a lot of support and demand.
